New Executive Director Announced for NeSSA

June 28, 2018 – The Northeast Self Storage Association (NeSSA), comprised of Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island, announced that Courtney J. Long will serve as their new Executive Director effective July 1, 2018. NeSSA’s long-term Executive Director, Lorna M. Bolduc, has decided to retire after having worked with the states that make up the association for just over 10 years.

“Retirement is calling and I’m looking forward to a more relaxed lifestyle,” said Lorna. “I started working with CTSSA in 2007 and with MASSA in 2010 and the relationships I developed have helped make my career in association management, and more specifically as a self storage association exec, a rewarding one. Thank you to all for your support over the years.”

Lorna hired Courtney in February 2015 to serve as CTSSA’s and MASSA’s Membership & Meetings Manager. They have worked closely together over the last three years on all aspects of managing the association.

Joe Victoria, President of NeSSA, said, “Lorna has been an integral part of our history and will always be part of our future as she was responsible for merging our states into the first regional self storage association. We appreciate everything Lorna has done for us over the years and wish her a wonderful and fulfilling retirement. NeSSA’s board members have worked with both Lorna and Courtney for the past several years, so it only seems fitting to have Courtney take over the reigns. She has learned from the best and we are all looking forward to working with her in this new role.”

CTSSA and MASSA Merger Takes First Major Step

As announced late in 2016, a potential merger of CTSSA and MASSA has been in the planning stages. Work with an attorney who has experience working with business nonprofits began in January of this year. The goal is that CTSSA and MASSA will become one organization by fall 2017 and we are pleased to report that significant progress to that end has been made.

On May 10, 2017 the CTSSA Board and the MASSA Board held a joint Board meeting in Sturbridge, MA, to review the associations’ plan for a merger of CTSSA and MASSA. The merger is taking place under the auspices of the State of Massachusetts and in order to move ahead, several documents required by the State needed Board approval. Both Boards reviewed and discussed the attorney-generated documents. Each Board had to approve the merger for their organization, they both then had to approve an agreement to merge, and two other State-required forms. Additionally, a new set of bylaws based on the very similar bylaws each organization already had in place, were considered by the joint Boards.

It is exciting to report that both Boards approved all documents unanimously. The unanimous approval is testament to the fact that this merger is good for both Connecticut and Massachusetts members as well as the self storage industry in general.

While the merger is between the two active state associations, the goal of the merger is to expand our geographical reach by also including the Rhode Island self storage industry. Rhode Island has been inactive for many years and there have been requests from many of the facilities there to become active. The steps necessary to include Rhode Island are also being addressed so that Rhode Island facilities will now also have an association they can call their own.

The new merged organization’s name will be the Northeast Self Storage Association, or NeSSA. This name continues the branding we have already established for the Northeast Storage EXPO and the Northeast EDGE (our joint, quarterly newsletter). The tagline under the name of the association will list the three states that the newly formed association will serve.

The next step is for voting members of both CTSSA and MASSA to approve the merger. A ballot is being developed under the guidance of the attorney and will be distributed to members with voting rights. It is of the utmost importance that members vote and return their ballots to the office. We will notify you when the ballots are distributed and will stay in close contact with you about this critical component of the merger.

All members and potential members are invited to call or e-mail the office if you have questions, concerns, or discussion about the merger. Contact information is below. Additional information on the merger is available at: Merger Details.

The national Self Storage association (SSA) is very supportive and is behind our efforts to unite three small northeastern states into one larger, unified association. One regional association is more likely to increase the number of members, the number of attendees at events, and give our vendor members more visibility with their primary audience.

Contact us with any questions, concerns, or further discussion. We’d be happy to chat with you about the merger.

Call for 2017 Board Nominations

Members of the Connecticut Self Storage Association are invited to participate in the nomination process for Director positions on the 2017 CTSSA Board of Directors. You may self nominate or nominate someone you think meets the requirements below.

Nominations are due by August 26, 2016.

We will be filling two (2) three-year terms during this election process. Terms begin January 1, 2017.

Download the form to nominate candidates who you believe would assist the self storage industry in Connecticut by providing strong leadership to our State Association. Before nominating someone, please ask them if they are willing to serve on the CTSSA Board. Self nominations are also encouraged, so if you would like to serve on the Board, please nominate yourself by filling out the nomination form.

Please include a brief typed bio (Word document) and a picture of the nominee (.jpg file) with your nomination. These items are required for the ballot and will be required within three days of submission if not initially sent with the form.

For an individual to be placed on the ballot, he or she must be a member of CTSSA or an employee of a member in good standing. They must agree to fulfill the responsibilities of the CTSSA Board of Directors.

These responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Attend Board meetings made up of a combination of conference calls and in-person meetings; approximately four (4) to five (5) per year.
  • Represent the Association to potential new members, current members, and vendors.
  • Promote ideas and opportunities that would benefit the membership and/or the self storage industry.
  • Attend meetings, events, and seminars hosted by CTSSA.
  • Become involved in one of the sub-committees created by the Board.

We look forward to building a strong leadership team for 2017 as we continue to build a stronger Association.
