It’s been a while since we’ve seen each other, and that needs to change! Let’s catch up over Zoom and knock the dust off our social skills before we get back to live events this fall. This get-together is completely informal, so come as you are! Messy hair, yoga pants, or even while you’re manning your facility’s office; we just want to see how you’re doing.
NeSSA’s virtual networking event is taking place Thursday, June 10th at 3:00 PM EST. This hour of interaction and networking is free to whoever would like to join us, so block out your calendar and register today. There may also be opportunities to win some prizes!
Sponsorships are available for this event! Contact Courtney for more information.
You’ve heard of both tenant insurance and tenant protection plans… but do you know what the differences between them are? During our next webinar on Thursday, June 17th, our speakers will lay out what each program has to offer, why they’re a good idea for your business, and how to easily implement them at your facility. Join Chris Betteridge from Deans & Homer as he updates you on all things tenant protection and Damon Emerson of StoreEase Virtual Management for a lesson in tenant insurance. Be sure to bring plenty of questions!
Due to the repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Northeast Self Storage Association Board of Directors has had to make the difficult decision to reschedule the annual Northeast Storage EXPO until 2022. At this time our venue is still shut down, and the state of Massachusetts is imposing a 10-day quarantine or a recent negative COVID test to outside travelers along with additional gathering restrictions. With so many unknowns, planning a large event is impossible at this time.
In order to allow enough time for these obstacles to subside, the EXPO will now be held May 10th and 11th, 2022 at the MGM in Springfield, MA. All exhibitors have been informed and given the option of a full refund or a registration transfer, and speakers have been notified as well.
We will continue to plan our live half-day educational Retreat for October 7th, 2021 at the Publick House Historic Inn in Sturbridge, MA. More information on this event will be available soon.
NeSSA remains dedicated to providing our members and all those within the Northeast storage industry with the highest quality of education and most accurate information possible. We will be reaching out in the coming weeks with a survey about education; please be sure to participate so your voice is heard. You can also check back here and on our social media pages for news and updates.
Like you, we are once again extremely disappointed that we will not get to meet at our EXPO this year. Know that we are here for you and that you can reach out to us with questions at any time.
In our next webinar on April 7th, we will cover some of the details to consider when forming an expansion strategy. Our speaker, Steve Hajewski of Trachte Building Systems, will start with a discussion on determining value of an existing property and what you can pay for vacant land for a new project. The presentation will cover a variety of topics related to planning and permitting an expansion, and common snags that developers run into during the process. We will also discuss the improvements that you’ll look at when you purchase an older facility – including security, management, and marketing, as well as some hard to fix problems and red flags to look for and avoid when buying.
Whether you’ve been a member since before the merger or you just signed up this year, the benefits of membership with NeSSA are always growing and evolving. During this webinar, Executive Director Courtney Kahler will take you on a guided tour of Northeast Self Storage Association’s website where together you can explore all that NeSSA has to offer, including leases, archived webinars and newsletters, state-specific resource pages, and more. Your online member benefits are just waiting at your fingertips!
Mark your calendars for Tuesday, December 8th or just register now!

10:15 AM Market Evaluation, Cap Rates, Aftermath of Initial COVID-19 Impacts, and Where the Market is Heading with Kevin Bledsoe, Investment Real Estate, LLC
One of the most frequent questions asked over the last 90 days from self storage owners is, “What are you seeing in the market as a result of COVID-19 and what will be the short-term and long-term effects?” More specifically, self storage owners want to know if occupancy is down at facilities, how bad delinquency issues are, what is happening with property values, if new construction projects are moving forward, what will happen to property values in the near future, how day-to-day operations have changed, if they should process rent increases, and what the future of our industry is. Our speaker talks to thousands of owners from across the country every year, ranging from single property owners to CEOs of the country’s largest REITs. His company subscribes to data collection programs in order to keep a pulse on the industry and works to understand where they see the market heading as we enter 2021. Let’s take some time to understand where the market is going and what owners are doing to prepare for the future.
